Stone Crosses
The stone crosses are a reminder of the thousands of invocations to the supernatural that dot Galicia. They are placed at the crossroads of roads, in churchyards, in the surroundings of chapels or guarding cemeteries in order to protect from the supernatural. They are a sign of identity linked to a time when the paths and pilgrimages were lonely and dark paths where the traveller needed protection against the mythical Holy Ghost or wandering souls. In other occasions they were the result of the Christianisation of pagan places of worship.
The Viladaíde stone cross, situated on a cross of roads, is the most famous of Barreiros.
It presents the Crucified Christ with four nails inclining the head to the right and with the hands closed. As you can appreciate, the cross is more recent than the clothesline. This is due to the fact that a new nail was put on it in 2009 as the original one was stolen in 2007.
In the atrium of the church of Santiago de Reinante and near the San Xusto de Cabarcos church, on the North Way to Santiago, there are other beautiful samples of these heritage elements.
