Raised granaries

The «hórreos» (raised granaries), here called «cabozos«, are a typical construction of a farmhouse used to dry and store corn and other cereals. In Barreiros we can basically find two types of raised granaries: the first one is the Ribadeo raised granary and the second one the Mondoñedo raised granary.

The Ribadeo type is, almost totally, built in stone; however, the Mondoñedo type combines stone and wood.

In Viladaíde we will find a beautiful set of raised granaries of these two types, highlighting among them the Moreda raised granary with the particularity of having four floors. Also well known, in Celeiro de Mariñaos, is the Perana raised granary, sitting on a half-point arch, similar to the Cabana raised granary in Val do Caínzo and to the Rafael’s house, both in San Xusto de Cabarcos parish.
