Lagoa de Pallares route

This route goes through a paradise comprised of the Foz-Masma ria, a key place for European biodiversity (Natura 2000 network), and the characteristic rural landscape of this corner of Galicia. It is almost always full of small buildings with an identity of their own, a result of the collective heritage of our ancestors.

At its convergence with the Cantabrian sea, the ria is a fertile natural space that is very attractive for a lot of bird species, which use it as a resting place during the migrations and as a shelter during the winter. This makes it one of the best places on the Lugo coastline to go birdwatching.

Throughout the route there are multiple occasions to get close to the edge of the mouth of this river and see the countless animal and plant species. Some of the flora and fauna of the natural area marked as a Special Protection Area (SPA) are Zostera seagrass, common sea-lavender, salmon, lamprey and river mussels.

Halfway through lies the small Pallares lake, which used to be a quarry but nowadays is naturalized, and it gives this route its name.

The cultural heritage, which is mostly on the second part of the route, shows the interaction of the population with the environment, their traditions, values and even their creativity. Some of the elements of this important legacy are houses, granaries, lavoirs, churches, dovecots and crosses.
