Indiano Schools of San Miguel and Santiago de Reinante

Both were built at the expense of the «Sociedad de Instrucción Hijos de San Miguel y Reinante»*, founded in Havana in 1908. In the same year of its foundation, it already had more than a hundred members who, not only financed the construction of both schools, but also covered the expenses of the necessary material so that the formation of the boys and girls was free for the families.

School of San Miguel de Reinante

Inaugurated in 1916 and built with a rectangular cloister plan, at first it had a single floor with four classrooms, two for each sex. Over time it was extended with a first floor that housed the teachers’ living quarters.

The entrance staircase gives it an outstanding appearance, as well as the semicircular pediment that protrudes from the façade with the following inscription: “EDIFICIO ESCOLAR SOCIEDAD HIJOS DE SAN MIGUEL Y REINANTE”.*

*SCHOOL BUILDING OF THE SOCIETY: SONS OF SAINT MIGUEL AND REINANTE.

Nowadays it is a municipal building recently rehabilitated as a multipurpose hall and social local.

School-house Santiago de Reinante

Inaugurated in 1925, this school-house was divided into two parts with different purposes. A wing was dedicated to teaching with two classrooms, one for boys and the other for girls; and the other was the teachers’ living quarters. Both areas were connected by the main entrance hall.

Its main façade, which stands out for its horizontality, is crowned in the centre by a triangular pediment flanked by pinnacles, in whose tympanum there is the following inscription:
«EDIFICIO ESCOLAR S. HIJOS S. SAN MIGUEL Y REINANTE».*

*SCHOOL BUILDING OF THE SOCIETY: SONS OF SAINT MIGUEL AND REINANTE.

It was built on the site of the old mixed school of the parish, which dates back to 1885.
