Altar beach

This beach is 1100 meters long and its width varies between 50 and 140 meters, depending on the tide. It’s next to the Masma River mouth and it’s within its protected natural space (SPA).

This seaside is ideal for children because small ponds are formed when the tide is low and they allow for low-risk bathing. Despite this, it’s still good to be careful.

This beach is named after the sacrifices that were presumably done here as an offer to their gods. These sacrifices were performed at the island on its center, named “Pena de Altar”, which used to be connected to the Punta do Castro de San Bartolo

Between the beach and the mouth of the Masma River lies a broad dune formation. It’s very important not to step on it to ensure its preservation, as it’s a scarce and living ecosystem full of biodiversity.

A big proportion of the dune and sand systems are part of the native Kentish plovers’ protection plan and it’s considered a critical spot for the conservation and recovery of this species, so certain activities are banned during the nesting period.
